Make Your Own Oolong + Chia Seed Smoothies!

We’ve been craving smoothies recently. We’re not sure if it’s the creamy texture, the fruity ingredients, or the fact that we know we’re doing something good for our bodies, but we can’t get enough!

Of course, we tinkered a bit to come up with our own recipe adaptations using oolong tea in place of milk or other dairy. And guess what? It worked great! Here are some of our favorite smoothies using oolong and chia seeds. Chia seeds are an edible seed with a mild, nutty flavor that goes great with oolong. They’ve recently become a darling of the health-conscious community for their antioxidants, fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids, and emerging research even suggests that they may help improve cardiovascular health and lower blood pressure. They’re easy to use and easy to store: Just keep them in a cool, dry place in your pantry, and sprinkle them into your smoothies when you blend them.

Incorporating your favorite oolong tea into smoothie recipes is easy: Simply brew your preferred oolong tea in advance, freeze it in an ice cube tray, and blend it up with the remaining ingredients. Ta-da! You’ve got a yummy frozen treat with tons of health benefits. Here are some of our favorite Tea-Ave-tested oolong-chia smoothies:

Cinnamon Pear Berry Smoothie With Chia. This one’s great for when you’re craving something sweet. Recipe adapted from Mary at The Kitchen Paper.


1 frozen banana

1 cup frozen mixed berries

1 pear, chopped

1 cup Alishan Jin Xuan Oolong (frozen as ice cubes)

¼ tsp cinnamon

1 tsp of chia seeds


Sunrise Detox Smoothie with Chia. Energy dragging a bit? Or do you simply need a little help relaxing? With fresh lemon juice and tons of produce, this flavorful smoothie’s perfect for starting your health kick. Recipe adapted from Amy at Amy in the Kitchen


1 frozen banana

½ cup frozen mango

½ cup pineapple

½ cup frozen raspberries

1 cup Wenshan Baochung Oolong (frozen as ice cubes)

juice of one lemon

1 tsp of chia seeds 


Tropical Pineapple Smoothie with Chia. This smoothie’s perfect for a refreshing afternoon pick-me-up. Recipe adapted from Yum in Your Tum


1/2 cup frozen pineapple chunks

1 cup frozen mango chunks

1 banana, cut into small chunks

1/2 cup LiShan Oolong (frozen as ice cubes)

1 tablespoon plain greek yogurt

1 tsp. honey

1 tsp of chia seeds


Avo Kale Smoothie with Chia. Our personal fave! This healthy smoothie tastes awesome for breakfast. Recipe adapted from Jugo Juice.


1/2 avocado

1 cup of Orange Juice

1/2 pineapple

1/2 banana, cut into small chunks

1/2 cup Alishan Jin Xuan Oolong (frozen as ice cubes)

1 cup kale

1 tsp of chia seeds

Whether we’re drinking them as a frosty treat, a morning meal or an afternoon pick-me-up, we’re totally digging our oolong-chia smoothies. We hope you like them, too!
